Back to What does your August 2010 vote represent?
When the SMART property tax expires in August 2010, you will have
a choice.
A "YES" vote means to pay with property
taxes without "Operation Bring Back SMART" or other
proven methods of protecting state funds and securing federal grants first.
A "NO" vote means the Michigan Department of Transportation is
required by law to pay or provide alternatives for the handicapped without more
local tax increases. The present tax rate legally prevails.

-
A new regional mass transit agreement will likely require large county tax increases without additional state money and continue to reject industry support in favor of more government instead.
-
The state constitution could be changed to allow county sales taxes to pay for mass transit with little or no incentives to make better use of limited tax dollars.
-
Your suburban tax increases could be utilized to operate the Detroit Department of Transportation without adequate state revenue sharing or improvements to meet minimum standards, if state laws are changed.
